LIVINGSTON, NJ – The MHS Girls Tennis Team, while still celebrating their victories over Golda Och, Columbia, Livingston, and Newark Academy in the finals en route to their fourth consecutive Essex County Tournament, met Newark Academy for the second time this season. But this time the Lady Minutemen had a chip on their shoulder, seeking revenge.

The team had not been tested throughout the season, going into the match unscaved with a 13-0 record.

Nationally ranked Senior Stephanie Schrage was almost perfect, as per usual. Continuing her dominance over Newark Academy’s ace, Cynthia Huang, Schrage rolled past her opponent for her seventh career victory over Huang.

Junior Alex Pritsker was able to win a closely contested match against Newark Academy’s Lauren Holtzman 6-4 6-4.

The Lady Minutemen would make it interesting though. Alison Bader pulled off the upset against Millburn’s Sydney Zirlin in the final singles match 6-2 6-2. It is the second time this season that Bader has had Zirlin’s number. Bader earned Newark Academy’s only win against the Lady Millers in the Final Round of the Essex County Tournament. Zirlin is still settling into her new singles role, replacing Joanna Atwater, after dominating the doubles category alongside now Senior Isabella Wuang.

Wuang and her new doubles partner Junior Sarah Jacobs were not able to continue their perfection though. After narrowly defeating Newark Academy’s duo of Crystal Wang and Sydney Loh 7-5 6-3, Loh and Wang were looking for redemption. Wuang and Jacobs won the first set handedly 6-3. However, Wang and Loh refused to go away as they muscled a tie break victory in the second set. Carrying the momentum, Wang and Loh were destined to win the match in the tie breaking set.

The other doubles match proved to be the decider. Millburn’s Macey Wardius and Jessica Raystin fittingly defeated the Lady Minutemen in the first set via tiebreak. After that, the two cruised to victory, allowing Millburn to squeeze out a close win down South Orange Avenue.

The Lady Millers look to keep their season perfect after the Rosh Hashanah break on October 5th as they host the Montclair Lady Mounties.
