Millburn failed to play spoiler on Thursday to the reigning Group 4 State Champion Montclair Mounties bid at an undefeated season. Heading into the game, which contended with the weather throughout the duration, Montclair had beaten Millburn every time in the last eight meetings between the two clubs.


In the first half, Sophomore Shannon Tanner replacement, Katherine Kuiken played a perfect backstop and was able to shut out Montclair in the first half. However, the Millers were not able to control the ball on Montclair’s side of the ball and did not have any chances to score as well.


After the halftime intermission, the tie was broken with Montclair’s Rebecca Van Siclen’s fourth goal of the season, making the score 1-0. It was all Montclair from there. On the next possession, Amalya Johnson scored her first of her two goals making the score 2-0. With the Millers already facing a large deficit, in the middle of the second half, Erin Mieth netted a goal for herself. Three minutes later came Amalya Johnson’s second score of the day off a costly misplay by the Millburn defense. Finally, to finish the Mounties day, Grace Riggs found the back of the net to reach the final score, 5-0.


Montclair extended their win streak to 21 games, dating back to last year, on top of improving to 8-0 on the season. On the other side, the Millers suffer a loss that brings them to 2-5-2 on the season.
