Yes, you did read the title correctly! Midway through December, I write holiday cards for my teachers and friends. This past holiday season, I had a couple extra cards and thought “Why not send a card to a couple celebrities, just to see if I receive anything back? I decided to send one to the actor who plays (or, played) my favourite superhero of all time.

Quite honestly, I really was not expecting to hear anything back from him. I just googled his fan mail address online, and 5 different ones popped up. I chose the one I thought was most legit. I wrote the card and sent it off towards the end of December. A small (okay, huge) part of me secretly wished I would get something, ANYTHING, back.

Weeks turned into months, and I forgot that I had sent the card. But… On March 9th, I came home to a letter waiting for me on my kitchen table.

On the center of the envelope, I saw that someone had taped a piece of paper with my address on it. After a second glance, I realised that the handwriting on the center of the envelope was my own. On the top left-hand corner of the envelope, I saw that this letter had come from Burbank, California.

“There’s no way this is from him, right?” I said to my parents. “I can see “Avengers Endgame” written on what’s inside! But it can’t be from him!” By this point I couldn’t take it anymore, I just needed to open this letter.

And what did I find? A picture of Tony Stark in an Iron Man suit from an Avengers Endgame poster. Written on the picture was “Best wishes, Robert Downey Jr.”

At this point, I couldn’t stop smiling and may have died a little inside. And yes, I know it’s just a generic message, but I couldn’t (and still can’t) get over the fact that I still got something back!

The signed picture is now safely sitting in a photo frame at the top of my bookshelf, and is also my most prized possession. Sadly, I didn’t hear anything back from the other celebrity I sent a card to. Robert Downey Jr.’s response makes up for it, anyway.

So there you have it! The valuable lesson I learned from this experience is it’s definitely worth a shot to send cards to fan mail addresses. Tom Holland, among other celebs, have already been added to my list for the next holiday season!
